Endoscopy Q & A

What is an endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a type of exam that allows your GI Physicians Inc. provider to see what’s going on inside your body. The procedure gets its name, endoscope, from the tool used during the process. This is a long, thin tube with a tiny camera attached to one end.

During an endoscopy, your GI Physicians Inc. provider feeds the endoscope into your body to get a precise look at what’s going on internally. This procedure allows them to diagnose a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions or screen you for health concerns like colon cancer without the need for any incisions.

Why would I need an endoscopy?

If you’re experiencing symptoms like abdominal pain and cramping, chronic constipation or diarrhea, or blood in your stool, your GI Physicians Inc. provider may recommend an endoscopy to determine the cause of your symptoms. An endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that helps provide an accurate diagnosis so you can get the best, most targeted treatment possible.

What types of endoscopy are available?

As gastroenterological specialists, the team at GI Physicians Inc. offers three separate types of endoscopy:

Colonoscopy

During this type of endoscopy, the endoscope (also called a colonoscope) is inserted through your rectum to allow your GI Physicians Inc. provider to see inside your large intestine. This allows them to screen you for colon cancer or diagnose conditions like Crohn’s disease.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

If you’re experiencing unexplained stomach pain, your GI Physicians Inc. provider may perform this type of endoscopy. During this procedure, they feed the endoscope through your mouth, so your provider can see your esophagus and stomach to diagnose a number of conditions.

Capsule endoscopy

If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of tube insertion, ask your GI Physicians Inc. provider about PillCam™. With this type of endoscopy, you swallow a small capsule that contains a camera. As it passes through your body over the coming days, it takes thousands of pictures used to diagnose your problem.

Capsule endoscopy is particularly useful in diagnosing problems with the small intestine, which is challenging to reach via traditional endoscopy.
